As well as my secret weapons to help you dig deep and do the work it takes. I’m honoured and grateful to have this opportunity to share this together with you. Right here on the Thriving Creator Podcast. I’m glad you’re here. Let’s get started.
What do you do when your hard work doesn’t make everyone happy? Imagine this, you’ve just poured your heart and soul into creating the best YouTube video you can possibly have created.
The editing is on point, the content is dialed in, and you’re ready to share it with the world. But just as you hit that publish button doubt starts to creep in. What if nobody watches it? What if they do watch it and they don’t like it?
Have you ever experienced these nagging doubts that flood your mind before sharing your hard work? But you don’t let the nagging doubts get the better of you. When you press publish so that your unique video can enter the YouTube verse to be viewed by people all over the world, and then comments start coming in, and you get that response.
The angry one, the abusive one, the condescending one, the outright rude one. You now have to figure out what to do with this emotional bomb that was just dropped on you.
I’ll never forget one of the times I received a negative comment about how one of my videos was out of sync. Not only did this viewer express their annoyance in the YouTube comment.
But they also hunted me down on my Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram, just to make sure I knew how much they disliked it. And then they reached out to a fellow YouTube creator I had collaborated with in the past, and told them to pass the feedback onto me to make sure that I got it. Who has time for that?
Seriously? I also get people who leave comments, frustrated and angry with all sorts of things, from how I deliver my content, how I pronounce certain words, how I look. It’s very annoying because I also believe that these people could have easily stopped watching my video and found another one if they thought I was so offensive.
But here’s the thing. We have a choice when faced with such shenanigans. We can choose to either respond or let it go.
There was a time I would choose to respond and start a conversation with the viewer who left that harsh comment. In the hope to clarify a misunderstanding or address whatever issue they had.
To find some common ground. But nowadays, I simply let it go because I’ve come to realise that you can’t make everyone happy. And guess what? That’s not my job and it’s not your job either.
Our job is to create and share world-class content with people who need to hear it. Now, let me share my ultimate secret to protecting your mental well being on YouTube. I call it, meet those mofos.
It’s about taking control of your experience as a creator. Here’s what I do. Firstly, I delete the comment right away. Remove that negativity from the channel so that I don’t have to see it ever again.
The second thing I do is I hide the user. So you’re able to right click and hide the user. And this means that their future comments won’t show on your channel. They’re basically banned or blocked or muted from commenting because no one, but themselves can see the comments they leave and they’ll never know.
Thirdly, I add block words to my channel settings. So you can add a list of words and phrases that you don’t want to see in the comments to your blocked words list. YouTube will automatically filter out comments that contains these words.
So personally, I no longer engage with negative comments. I simply don’t have time for that. And I don’t let them consume my energy or live rent free in my head anymore.
I redirect my focus to the positive comments and viewers who express their gratitude for my content. They are the ones who truly appreciate and benefit from what I have to offer. So keep creating, keep publishing those videos and keep inspiring.
After all, the world needs more of that and it needs more of you. The episode is over, but it doesn’t have to end here. If you’d like to have your YouTube channel running like a perfectly synchronized clock, attracting a growing audience and bringing in a steady income for you.
