My Live Stream Equipment set up – Video Transcript

Hello, and welcome to the live stream, whether you are joining live with us now, or if you’re catching us on the re-play. I’m really excited today. I’m doing something a little bit different. I am going to be walking you through my live stream set up on a live stream.

So it’s a little bit of live stream inception. And this is all about, just about look behind the scenes in terms of what I do in terms of my setup, how I’ve kind of all got it laid out.

So you guys can see, you know, what’s happening when I do what I do. So for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Sara Nguyen, and I help you build a business using video on social media with ease. Now, whether you are joining live with us now, or if you’re catching the replay, please feel free to drop a question in the chat or in the comments.

And I’ll answer them at the end of the live stream or at the end of the show. At the end of the whatever I’m doing right now. And if need be, I will create another video if we have enough questions about something.

And as usual, all of the links to everything I’m talking about today is in the description. And we have got a lot of gear that we’re talking about today. So, yeah, I get asked all the time, what camera do I use?

What microphone do I use? How do I kind of have my setup all arranged? And I thought, all right, I’m going to show them how it kind of all happens.

A look behind the scenes and I’m doing, I’m going to do it live. I thought that this could go incredibly wrong, but I know that, you know, there’s only one way, there’s, there’s no time like the present, so let’s just do it.

So I thought, you know, first things first I’ll show you a look into the actual space. So I also get questions on whether these backdrop is a green screen, and it’s not. So I actually live stream from a spare bedroom in our house, and it’s also the same space that I work on all my YouTube videos, as well as non YouTube work-related stuff.

So other projects that I’m a part of. So let me have a, let me zoom back so you can kind of see a little look at the actual room. So this is pretty much the room.

So as you can see, this is a shelf, it’s a shelf with some piping that I purchased and the wall is painted. And at the bottom there, you can see like that’s just an Ikea desk. And as you can also see over there to the side, I’ve got my sewing machine.

So this is kind of my creativity, work, crafting room, and it’s kind of where it all happens. And if you’re wondering how come the desk is so clear, the answer is because I move everything and it all goes underneath the desk. So the mess is all underneath the desk.

So that’s kind of like a quick look at, you know, what happens behind the scenes. I’m going to switch cameras now so that you can see, and I’m like, I’m not sure how this is going to work so you can see what, you know, what I see. So the front and how I’ve arranged the cameras and the microphones. So just give me a minute and I’m going to switch this out now.

Okay. So now what you’re looking at is a look behind the scenes, literally behind the scenes, of what I see when I am live streaming. And I’m just literally going to point out. So over here, we’ve got my microphone. So this is the Shure sm7b.

And the microphone is mounted to a microphone arm, which is mounted to the desk. And the reason that I have it like this is because during a live stream, it works great in terms of being in front of me and I can use it. When I’m not actually streaming, what I can do is I can swing it out of the way, and then it’s no longer actually there.

So I can, you know, I have that space free. So that’s the first thing that I have. So I’ve got my little Shure sm7b microphone, and it is an XLR microphone. So that requires it to be plugged into an audio interface.

And this is a look at my audio interface. So this is the RODE Caster Pro. And as you can see, it’s got this red thing sticking out the back and that’s the pre-amp. So that’s how the microphone is plugged into the actual audio interface. And then the audio interface is plugged into my computer.

So that’s how that comes together. I was like, Oh, this is going not too badly so far. Now, in terms of the actual, I’m going to move the microphone back out of the way, now let’s draw this back a little bit more so we can talk a little bit more about this entire setup.

So the audio is, you know, microphone, audio interface, and then the audio interface is plugged into my computer. Let’s talk a little bit about my computer. So on one side, as you can see here, I’ve got my iMac. And the iMac is also mounted to the desk.

I mount the iMac to my desk, so I get off the desk and it also allows me to kind of move it around so I can move it up and I can move it to the side. When I’m not actually live streaming or recording video, both of these monitors, they come towards the middle, they close towards the middle so I can see them and actually do other work.

So that’s how that kind of comes into play. Now, in order to live stream in 4k, I’ve got here, this is, it’s a little bit blurry, but this is my AVerMedia capture card. And it is a 4k capture card.

It’s on the higher end, but it’s incredibly reliable. So I love it because it has never let me down in terms of quality. It turns on every single time, unlike another capture card that I’ve had to deal with.

And it is like one of the best capture cards in the world. So I absolutely love that. Now, the camera that I use, let’s kind of bring you a little bit closer here, like I’m manually moving this webcam, it’s actually hilarious, the camera that you see here, so this is the Canon 90d.

It’s been my trusty live streaming camera for a year. I think it’s literally coming up to a year that we purchased it because it came out about I think it was, no, it came out about October or November, 2019. And then in December, that year, last year we were going overseas.

So we saw it on sale during the boxing day sales. And then we’re also going overseas so we’ve got duty free. So that’s why we grabbed it ’cause it was kind of the best price that we’re ever going to get it.

So that’s the camera that I use and behind the camera, as you can see, is my ring light. Now I’m not in love with where it is at the moment. It’s just on a tripod sitting behind things. My aim is to eventually move it so that it can be part of this mount that you see.

So this mount thing is literally a monitor arm, so literally, it’s a monitor desk, monitor arm and it has two arms. So that’s how I mounted that there. And that’s how I mounted the DSLR there. And that just allows me once again, to get things off the actual desk, because I found that the more livestreaming I did, the more gear I had, the more stuff was on my actual desktop.

I try to keep it as minimal and off the desk as possible. And the other thing that I found and the reason that I have this wonderful desk mount-y thing, and the links are in the description, is I found that prior to having this desk mount, I was using actual tripods. And the tripod would take up like an extra like metre on each side. And it was just filling up the room with just a tripod.

And I was feeling so claustrophobic. Like the whole thing was just kind of collapsing on top of me. So this is kind of like a look into how it all comes together for me. So we’ve got, you know, a solid monitor mount that kind of acts as a monitor mount, as well as acting as my DSLR mount.

I’ve tried different options with the DSLR. So Elgato also have a, you know, a mount as well. And I found that with that mount, it was too high. So when I shoved it onto the desk, it actually came like up to here as the minimum point. And then, therefore, the camera was up there.

So I found that this option was the best option. Then let’s break it down a little bit. So using my magic wand, what we have with this desk mount here, this is the arm that came with the desk mount.

So I just lowered it there. Here, we’ve got an extension pod. And this extension pod allows me to adjust the height of the actual, the camera, which is fantastic. So, you know, whether I’m, I need to get higher so I can get, you know, the camera higher or whether I need to get lower, this extension pod allows me to do that at a height that is suitable to me.

I’ve also got these ball head on the actual tripod as well, so that I can tilt the camera and it has a spirit leveller as well, so that I can, you know, adjust it and make sure that it’s as straight as possible. So that is how I do that.

I think like I have to give credit where credit is due. I was totally inspired by video that I saw by Taylor Pike and he had this phenomenal setup.

So this is an adaptation of one that he did. His one is crazier and has more stuff like sticking out of everywhere and he has more cameras as well. But, you know, I’m kind of feeling pretty happy with how this is all kind of come together.

What’s some other things to note that I’ve got going? Okay. So I think, like in terms of this setup, we’re going to go back to, I think in terms of this actual setup. I know I have to also say that, yeah, there’s a lot of stuff here.

I kind of have this added to it over time, over the last two years. So I didn’t just buy everything in one go. It’s kind of just being this progressive thing prior to setting up the desk with the desk mount and the tripod, I had it on just external tripod so it’s kind of just been this thing that I’ve adapted over time and all this gear has kind of been added over time.

So it’s not just a boom I woke up and then gear was actually there. Ooh, hopefully, you can hear me. I just realised that the microphone was way down. So as I was saying, yeah, this was not, the setup was not like the first thing that I had.

I’ve kind of built it over time. Yeah. Sorry guys. Sorry. I just had the wrong– I was so excited. Like I’ve got this microphone and I’ve got this microphone, but anyway, so just keep in mind that in terms of desktop setups and in terms of live streaming setups I’ve built this over time. And, that’s something that you can do as well. And I think of, I think I’m almost there.

I’d like to mount the ring light so that it is also not on the floor and it’s mounted to the desktop mount as well, but that is pretty much a look into my live streaming setup. Now I’m going to go into the question to see what you guys are asking.

Paul. True Norf. Hey, good to see you here. Thanks for joining us on the live stream. Gigi from Giga Art sends a big, wow. I’m glad, glad to see you here as well, Gigi. Let’s see. Thanks for all the love and support guys. David says, what about the wand?

So I had this great idea. I was like, I’m going to show them everything. I’m going to point to it with the wand, but then I kind of got a little bit overwhelmed by how much stuff I had and I had to show that the wand just kind of got in the way.

Anyway, so the mouse model, this is all Logitech mouse. So, I don’t know what model it is. Oh, David’s got it for me. The Logitech MX Master 2S. So that’s th mouse model. Okay. I’m afraid to know how much I’ve spent over time for this setup, which is probably the caveat to me saying that this is kind of be built and gathered over a couple of years.

I didn’t just wake up and drop the insane amount of money on it. And it’s been a progressive journey as well. And I am of the school of thought that if you actually spend money to buy equipment, to get a camera, get an audio interface, you can justify it if you create content regularly. And I am. So that’s, that’s my justification for it. Yes. So Paul says, “This is a great setup based on DSLR Shooter’s set up.”

Yeah, definitely. So it’s, it’s just been one of those things where I’ve been live streaming and I, you know, before I had this setup, it filled up the whole room. Like all of my gear filled up the whole room.

And I was like, I really need something that is more, I dunno, just it’s more compact and cleaner and tighter. And then I saw Caleb Pike’s video on his set up and I was like, I need to kind of work something out. And yeah, I borrowed bits and pieces of what he’s done.

And I think I’m kind of happy with how it’s all kind of come together. Paul says, “What cable management do you have?” I’ve got an answer to that, and that’s none. So it is a mess.

I’m not going to show you underneath the actual table, because I don’t know how to deal with the cables other than hiding them and pretending that they’re not there and covering them because as you know, the more gear you get, the more cables you need and it’s, it’s a lot.

So I don’t really have a solution to it. And also it’s not just the cables that, you know, come with your setup. It’s the other cables. So, you know, with microphones, you know, with gear, you end up with so many different cables everywhere, even those that are shoved in the cupboard over there.

I don’t know what to do with them either. So I don’t have a solution for that as well. David says, “Best mouse in the world, except for maybe the latest model”. I think this is a pretty good mouse.

I like that it’s a wireless mouse, Bluetooth mouse, and it’s white and it’s kind of clean and it’s ergonomic and it does the job really well. Gigi says, “Regarding the wand, is there a particular spell you recite before your live stream?” there’s not a particular spell, but it’s probably more like an offering that I go to do to the live stream gods of, please let the live stream go smoothly.

Don’t let me forget to turn off the microphone. Don’t let me do it. So it’s something I chant along those lines, I’m totally joking. I’m totally joking. No, yeah, as I said, I thought it would be funny, but then I was really overwhelmed by how much I had to show you guys.

And then the wand was kind of just there, but not there. So that essentially is a wrap-up of my live stream set up. What do you guys think about it? I’m sure I’ll get some judgy comments and I’m open to that, but remember it’s, I really think that live streaming, creating content, YouTube is a journey and we’re all evolving over time.

So, you know, regardless of what your setup is, it’s really it’s, I think it’s really good to recognise where you are and it’s also good to recognise how far you’ve come. When I first started live streaming, it was, you know, a really cheap webcam.

I didn’t even think I had a webcam. I just use my computer’s webcam at the time and I didn’t even think I had a microphone. The audio was terrible and now I’m kind of just progressed and grown it over time. So yeah, that is essentially a wrap for today’s video.

How do you get better at: livestreaming/video/danc How do you get better at: livestreaming/video/dancing/business? By taking bold, messy action...even when...and especially when it scares you. That means doing things like: livestreaming, running ads and business-building activities that feel uncomfortable... But you know you're supposed to do them. The truth is, that if your business/life isn't where you want it to be...you are the reason why. And when you take extreme ownership and massive action over and over... ...Combined with solid, relentless focus...you get success. But lots of people aren't willing to do the work and feel the discomfort. Because it's scary and you make yourself vulnerable. Yet, on the other side of the discomfort is what you've been longing and dreaming of. It's all a choice my friends. What's it going to be? Because COVID has completely taken over our lives Because COVID has completely taken over our lives this year, it’s hard to imagine life in this world without it now.   When life finally goes back to the new normal, are we going to be ready for it? Are we ready for the income/impact/growth we desire now? The truth is that you’ll never feel ready enough, and chances are ⁣that nobody is going to ‘choose’ you. ⁣ Instead, what if you do it.   What if you choose yourself? When I first started teaching social media, I didn’t exactly ⁣look and feel like a success story, especially when I made videos from my derelict apartment.   But I started small, and even more importantly, I showed up and declared myself ready. ⁣ No one was going to do that for me. My first few videos had 30 views on average. Then 50, then 100, and now, my top videos have over 100 000 views.  ⁣ Maybe one day, millions.   I declared myself a content creator, social media and video strategist and coach way before anyone else believed I was one.   I set up my own website, created my own content and uploaded my own videos and it was the combination of that hustle that was what started everything. ⁣ I wasn’t waiting for someone else to choose me, and I wasn’t waiting until I got a sign from the universe. ⁣ I decided that there was ⁣room for me (why not me?), and yes, there’s so much room for you too. ⁣ There’s room for:⁣ The quiet and the louder ones
The introverts and extroverts.
The out there quirky and the inward.

All ethnicities, ages, sizes, and histories. Why not you, too? #fempreneurs  #coursecreator #ceomindset #businessstrategist #onlinebusinesscoach #bossbabemovement #sheconquers #womanceo #buildyourbusiness #ceolife #womenwholead #fempreneur #buildinganempire #beingboss #digitalcoursecreator #marketingstrategist #aspiringentrepreneur #growyourbiz #businessmoves #coursecreators #businessgrowthstrategy #onlinecoursecreators #onlinecoursecreator #hersuccess #womenceo #solopreneurs #entrepreneurher #buildingmyempire #businesstraining

You’ve seen the quote… Comparison is the thie You’ve seen the quote… Comparison is the thief of joy. All the gorgeously curated Instagram squares and perfectly styled YouTube videos will get you in comparison mode pretty easily. (I totally get it ——> says the woman who has been told that she’s either ’too Asian’ or ‘not Asian enough’ her whole life.) When you see other successful businesses posting on social media… ...it's easy to let your reptilian brain take over… ...and to start thinking that success is limited to only a few people in the world. Unfortunately, once you start thinking down that path… ...you open yourself up to believing that you aren't good enough. I’ve seen too many incredible coaches, consultants and creatives get bogged down by allowing themselves to believe: "I’m not enough. I don’t have what it takes." But you can choose to do things differently. Do you think that Patty Jenkins, Director and Writer of Wonder Woman looked up and said, “Well, Wonder Woman has already been done…guess I’ll just go home and not make a new, amazing movie?” What if she had done that?! The truth is… ...if you want to transform your business, livestream, put yourself out there and see the growth that you deserve, you need to stop comparing yourself to other people. Or like our school teachers used to say…

One of the comments I get most often is… "Sara, One of the comments I get most often is… "Sara, you’re such a natural in front of the camera. I could never do that." And I find that rather amusing. Why? Because that was NEVER me. I was always the person behind the scenes — producing other people’s shows and webinars and livestreams. And you know what? I was comfortable. Comfortable with my job. Comfortable with my life. Comfortable all around, really. And that comfort made me feel safe. … but it also ate me away inside. Why? Because I knew I had a message to share, and I knew I could be in front of the camera sharing it… instead of stuck in the background building someone else’s dreams. But alas, it stayed that way far longer than I want to admit. And it stayed that way because of my own limiting beliefs — because of all the little stories I kept telling myself. Every time I thought about getting in front of the camera, a little voice would pop in my head and say: "What makes you think you’re good enough to be on camera?" It was torture. And it wasn’t until I overcame my limiting beliefs that I began to see real change. The truth is… I’ve never been ‘natural on camera’ or ‘made for the screen.’ I worked very hard to develop these muscles… especially as an introvert who’s naturally shy and insanely awkward. It was very challenging for me. But it was also the thing I knew I had to do if I ever wanted to rise above.

Right now, you may be at the time in your life when you’re finally saying "No" to mediocrity, lame excuses, and all the so-called barriers standing between you and greatness… And finally saying "Yes!" to the specialized knowledge, strategies, tools, and techniques that can take your business and career to the next level. You’re becoming someone who won’t settle for anything less than you deserve. So hit record, go live and get that thing out into the world. #fempreneurs #coursecreator #ceomindset #businessstrategist #onlinebusinesscoach #bossbabemovement #sheconquers #womanceo #buildyourbusiness #ceolife #womenwholead #fempreneur #buildinganempire #beingboss #digitalcoursecreator #growyourbiz #businessmoves #coursecreators #businessgrowthstrategy #onlinecoursecreators
When it comes to putting yourself out there, I sti When it comes to putting yourself out there, I still feel nauseous before a livestream or hitting record.
Despite these feelings…it’s about continuing to show up for the people that you want to serve…even when it’s hard. And it’s always hard.
.
.
.
If you keep going live and you keep hitting that record button…things start to happen. You get better at being on camera, you feel more confident, your audience see you and connect with you more and you can finally start moving the needle in your business with more reach, leads and sales.
.
.
.
But you deny yourself and your audience the chance of any video magic…if you don’t take action.

Write down your ideas. I use the Notes app on my i Write down your ideas. I use the Notes app on my iPhone when I get ideas and then I can reference them when I’m on my computer as well. I also use Google Keep...so I can sync thoughts and ideas across my mobile and computer. I found that I’ve forgotten less ideas this way...you know that stroke of genius you get...that you swear you won’t forget about...until you do...lol 🤣 I get ideas for videos and content all the time. Mostly when I’m about to fall asleep 😂...so I write them down and then later, I verify that there’s search volume/data to warrant a video. I believe in using data and not just our emotions (feels) to guide what we should create. I don’t always follow this workflow. Sometimes I look up trends and data volume first to give me inspiration on what content to create. And that’s ok too. As long as you’re creating...there’s no perfect formula or method. #contentideas #contentisking #contentisqueen #contentiseverything #videoideas
