So you may be interested in using Facebook Live but you’re not quite sure what gear in terms of cameras, microphones and lighting you need to get started and it’s all a little bit overwhelming. In this video I’m going to show you the basics you need to get up and streaming, so you know exactly what you need and everything that you don’t, stay tuned.
Hi I’m Sara Nguyen your online marketing strategist helping coaches consultants and creative pros build and grow their businesses using social media with ease, Facebook Live is a very powerful marketing tool that allows you to livestream from your phone to an audience online, thanks to our friends at Facebook. And it’s such an amazing tool due to the incredible reach that live videos are currently getting in the news feed particularly compared to other Facebook posts such as images or text status updates. So it’s a way of getting yourself out there and actually being seen so you can market your message.
So what do you need to go live? The first crucial thing you need in order to broadcast with Facebook live is a mobile device with a camera and the ability to connect to the internet. sorry Nokia 5110s you’re just not going to cut it.
Secondly, you need to have a Facebook Page. This is different to your Facebook profile. Facebook pages is the offering Facebook has for businesses. And you want to run your Facebook Live broadcast from your page so you can access all of the insights, all of the reporting, all of the data and the ability to advertise your Facebook Live as well. The third thing you need to have is the Facebook Pages Manager on your mobile device. Facebook Pages Manager can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store for free.
Once you’ve download the app, sign in using your Facebook credentials to access your Facebook page from there. The fourth thing you need to have in order to access Facebook Live is an internet or data connection. You really need to have a stable connection because if your connection breaks during your live broadcast your audience will see a black screen while your connection is down and this is a really interrupted viewing experience for your audience.
So those are the four essential things you need to get started: a mobile device, a Facebook Page, the Facebook Pages Manager installed on your mobile device and an internet connection.
The next few things I’m going to talk about are not essential but they’re nice to haves if you want to take your Facebook lives to the next level. You don’t need them to get started but you can invest in them later in your Facebook Live journey.
For sound, using an external microphone is a great idea particularly if you have a lot of background noise going on. You can either use a headset with a microphone such as the one that you typically get with your phone, or you can invest in an external level microphone to attach to your phone.
For stability and to avoid the shakiness that you get from holding your phone, I recommend considering using a tripod or a selfie stick. If you have a tripod lying around the house somewhere you can use that. You may need to get a phone mount in order to attach your phone to the tripod.
For lighting, natural light is best. If you can broadcast in front of a window during the day with beautiful sunlight – that’s all you need. If it’s a little darker where you are at, I’d recommend getting some lighting. Either a ring light or some soft box lights in order to illuminate you and put you in the best light.
If you really want to invest in lighting and you don’t have to do this, but if you want to spend a little money to create some beautiful videos I highly recommend a halo ring light. It gives you a beautiful flattering light making you look flawless without much effort and it doesn’t take up a lot of room compared to bulky soft box lights. Once again, it’s a nice to have. It’s not mandatory or necessary.
So there you have it. A breakdown of the basic equipment and software you need to get started and some nice to haves for when you’re ready to take Facebook Live to the next level.
