Episode 21: It’s time to stop saying that you’re no good at tech! – Podcast Transcript
It’s time for a dose of tough love…
I hear it way too often from people who want to start YouTube channels.
It’s time to STOP telling yourself you’re bad with technology.
So if you’ve ever said that you’re too old, too challenged, too creative, too tired or busy to learn new or different tech…this is for you.
Hey, Thrivers. I’m Sara Nguyen, creator of the thriving creator academy. And I’m here to help you go from stuck and overwhelmed to becoming a confident, profitable and thriving YouTube creator.
Join me here each week for honest conversations about what it really takes to be a successful YouTube creator, without compromising your creativity, sacrificing cheeky drinks with people you love or downtime for yourself.
You’ll hear about the hard lessons I’ve gone through so you can avoid making the same slow and costly mistakes on your YouTube journey, as well as my secret weapons to help you dig deep and do the work it takes. I’m honoured and grateful to have this opportunity to share this together with you right here on the Thriving Creator Podcast. I’m glad you’re here. Let’s get started.
There are TWO reasons that you need to STOP telling yourself, over and over that you’re just not any good at the tech stuff.
And they are.
Reason number 1..and this is a biggie…
If you’re not good at tech, it just means that you’re not good at it…YET.
But with time, with practice and with persistence…you can and will get there.
Where you are now, isn’t a final state. With everything in life…but especially with your technical ability.
As adults, we become so used to doing things quickly in our daily lives, be it at work, at home and with our family and friends and they become routine…because they have to be.
And when things are difficult, it feels odd and uncomfortable when you haven’t mastered something yet. So you…or we translate this discomfort to mean that we’re not any good and we will never get there and this is just not true, and we allow ourselves to get wrapped up in the fluster and overwhelm.
Just because you’re not good at something right now…doesn’t mean you will never be able to do it or get good at it.
Trust me, in your lifetime you’ve learned how to do far more complicated and challenging things than how to export a video or how to do keyword research for YouTube.
We just forget about the struggle we go through when we learn new things.
The real issues here is you’re using the fact that it’s uncomfortable to not be masterful at something and that you don’t enjoy it as a reason not do the work, not to spend the time to get the technical practice you need to master the skill.
And this is what you need in order to cure the feeling of how yuck it feels to not be able to do something easily.
And then your belief that you’re not good at tech becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The feeling of being uncomfortable and not good at something will never go away…and then you’ll be right. You are no good at tech but only because you decided and you made the decision to NOT learn to how get good at it.
So how do we get out of this vicious circle?
I want you to switch your mindset around tech – Don’t think of it as a negative and difficult thing that is holding you back in your YouTube journey. Think of it as something new that you’re learning because it will empower you to build your YouTube channel and be helpful for your business. Breaking it down step-by-step and committing to being a student will make it easier for you to keep learning.
You will get the hang of it, I know it.
If my mother, who never touched a computer until she was in her 50’s can learn how to use Photoshop – you can definitely learn how to get good at YouTube and tech.
Reason 2: If you have an online business – you HAVE to be good at tech
Reason 2: If you want to success on YouTube and have an online business, you MUST get good at the tech. It’s a huge requirement if you want to make life easier for yourself.
YouTube and running a successful online business involves a lot of tech. It’s essential and you will need it every day. Everything for YouTube relies on tech in some shape or form.
And even if you outsource the editing, uploading or research, you need to understand how the tech works in order to get your people to deliver high-quality output.
So saying “I’m not good at tech” or “I don’t want to learn tech” is really like saying “I want to be a chef but I hate cooking”.
You have chosen to be in the Youtube and therefore tech business and I promise you everything is going to go much smoother if you embrace it instead of trying to constantly avoid it. And resenting it.
And this doesn’t mean that you have to do ALL the tech in your business and for your YouTube channel. Tech is definitely something I recommend people outsource and delegate if they have a budget. But knowing the basics of tech will help you every step of the way to growing your channel and growing your online business.
My younger brother would always remind me and say – if you think you can and if you think you can’t…you’re right, sis.
I feel that’s very relevant to call upon and reflect on.
So everytime you say to yourself “mmm I can’t get this…I’m no good at this tech…”
Guess what?
You’re right!
You’re keeping yourself stuck and you won’t learn, you won’t get better…
And you won’t put your genius content out in the world and I just can’t have that. So please, please, please.
Let’s put an end to saying “I’m no good at tech”..and replace it with “I’m not good at tech just yet.”
