Canva Tutorial: How to make a logo (for free) – Video Transcript
Hi, I’m Sara Nguyen, and on this channel, I make tech and social media easier for awesome entrepreneurs like yourself. If you’re new to this channel, consider subscribing for all of the latest product reviews, social media marketing tips and training.

When you have a new business idea or project, and you need a logo, the name of the game is to make a logo that looks professional, quickly and easily. You have two options. Option one is to get someone to design it for you, such as a graphic designer. Option two is to do it yourself.
I’m going to walk you through how to create a logo for free using Canva. Let’s go over to my computer now, and I’ll show you how.
So this is an example of a logo that I created by myself from scratch for free using Canva, and it took me minutes. I’m going to show you exactly how I did it in Canva right now.
Now I’m assuming that you at the very least have a Canva account. If you’ve never used Canva before, if you don’t have a Canva account, check out the link in the description to my How To Use Canva tutorial and I step you through everything you need to get up and started with Canva.
This is assuming that you’ve already at least watched that or you know how to use Canva a little bit. And I’m going to show you now how to create a logo.
So once you’ve logged into Canva, you’re taken to the Canva home page. In the search bar, type logo, and then where it says create a design, select that logo icon there. This then opens up a canvas where you can start designing your own logo.
Now on the left-hand side, you’ll see that there are logo templates here. And on the top, they’re categorised by different categories. And if you scroll down, you’ll see the different categories.
And if you keep scrolling for a little bit, you’ll come across the section where it says All results so that you’re able to see all of the different logo templates that are in Canva for you to modify. And here’s where you can have a quick glance at different logo designs that you can choose, and you can modify it to suit your business and your brand.
Now with these logo templates, you can see in the bottom right-hand corner of them, they say free because that means that you don’t have to pay for anything. We love free.
So I chose a template which I could work with, and this is the one that I selected. And once you click on it, it will open itself into your canvas.
Now personally, I don’t love the prebuilt text blocks that Canva typically does for you. So I’m going to create my own ones. So I’m going to start by typing in text over the section.
So I selected the area that I wanted to replace the text for my logo, and this will be the sewing space, and that’s huge. So I’ve selected that and I’m going to bring it all the way down so that it fits.
That’s much better. And then I’m going to drag it so that it fits in this space. Now this little section here, I don’t like where that sits. I’m going to delete that, and I’m also going to delete this element so that it’s not that weird text in a strange format.
So we’re not done yet. So The Sewing Space, I’m going to get rid of Space and then I’m going to add text at the bottom. So I’m going to add a heading, let’s call it a heading. I’m going to move that down. So I select it and move it down.
Now I’m going to select it all and write Space that’s a little bit large. So I’m going to bring this down to, let’s go about half that size. So this is changing before my eyes. I’m going to make this a little bit larger. There we go.
So we’re getting close, we’re getting close to the design that you saw on the Facebook page before. This pink, I think we could do better.
So in terms of the colour, I select the shape of it, and I can change it to whatever colour I like. So these are brand colours that I’ve set up in my brand kit. That’s looking nice. I’m liking this.
This font is the default font that the template came with, and I’m like, it’s okay, but I’m going to change it to be a font that I’ve used and that I’ve uploaded. So I’m going to change this to be this font that I’ve uploaded. I like that. It’s really starting to come together.
Now the thing that I need now in the logo is an icon of some sorts so that people can identify or people know what the business or the brand is about, so I go back to elements. And because it’s The Sewing Space, and it’s a new hobby of mine, I’m going to look for a sewing machine, and then I’m going to select graphics because I want an illiterate illustrated graphic for the sewing machine.
Now if you have Canva for Work, you will see free with a little crown, and that means that the icon or the image is free for you to use as a Canva for Work user. That’s if you have the paid version of Canva.
If you’re not a Canva for Work user, you’re just a free Canva user, then you’ll see this button here that has the free icon. This is what looks like for the free images that you can use.
So go ahead and scroll and find the image that you want to use in your logo. I’m going to go ahead. I like the look of this one. I’m going to select that and then I’m going to resize it and place it just over here.
So just tying the edges to give a little bit smaller, a bit more to the edge. And that’s not too bad. I don’t mind that. So just like that, I created a logo using a free template. I changed the image, I changed the font, and I added an element, so I added other graphic to it.
I could also add a new page and choose another template and design another one at the same time, so I can compare the designs to each other, which is pretty cool ’cause it doesn’t cost you anything extra. You can design as you want.
So I’m pretty happy with that. It’s looking pretty identical to the design that I showed you before. Then I want to go ahead and download it. So I’ll select the download button here, and then I’m going to go download. I want to save this.
I can save it as a jpeg or a pdf, but I want to save it as a PNG, and I want to make the Transparent Background Option selected there. So then I’m also just going to choose the first page, and then I’m going to download it. And then I can use this as a logo file in designs that I do.
So here’s the design and I’ll show you what I mean. So this is not so clear because of the preview that you get on max. If you create a Facebook post, and then you upload the image as the image file, which is your logo, you can then place the logo on your designs, and it’s transparent, so it hasn’t got a white background.
And like that, you can start using your logo in your designs. You can add it to your Facebook page. You can add it to your social media images. And it was so simple to make, and I really love it. I think it’s cute. It’s reflective of what I wanted the logo to be.
And it’s done. It’s something that I could start using straight away.
