Business ideas 2020 – Video Transcript
I think now is the time for us to be creative and now is the time for us be innovative so that we can get through this because that’s what it’s all about now, getting through this and if and if any hope is to be heard, even thriving during this time.
And let’s go through some of the ideas that I have now and I’m going to present my screen. All things playing nicely. There we go. Okay. Let’s take, let’s go through some business ideas to start in 2020 particularly now if you’ve been really impacted by the craziness of the times at the moment.
In case you don’t know me, my name is Sara Nguyen, and I’m a content and course creator and I help small business owners to grow their business using social media and tech with ease.
This is a completely shameless plug for my course Facebook Live Impact. I teach you how to live stream and I love live streaming because it’s accessible to everyone.
It’s really easy to get up and running and to connect with an audience with ease. That’s probably how you found me right now, via my Facebook live stream or via the YouTube live stream, some big fan of it.
Make sure that you check out the description because that’s where I’m going to put links to all of the resources, any related videos and also freebies and downloads because who doesn’t love some freebies? Everything is in the description. Check that out.
Let’s talk about some strategies and get right into it because I know this is real for a lot of people. Many of my friends in the fitness industry, my friends in the real estate industry, realtors who are like, we have just been told that we cannot do what we need to do.
Don’t even get me started with food. All the changes that have happened that everyone has had to, everyone needs to adapt to at the moment.
Here are some ideas to help you, I guess, these are just some ideas and I’m going to come, I’ll share, share you these ideas, share these ideas with you. If I could talk properly today as well as the steps to actually implement them because what, what good is an idea and if you don’t actually do anything with it?
The first I guess, idea that I have is during this crazy time, particularly when businesses, restaurants in particular, they really need help and they really need people to help them get digital to get online. I know my favourite Thai restaurant, which my husband and I ordered takeaway from yesterday, it was a nightmare trying to get through and make an order.
All I wanted to do was support them. All I wanted to do was put an order through for dinner so that I can then go and pick it up. But it took like, I’m not even kidding, 10 calls because the line was busy, it wasn’t being answered.
It went to voicemail and I know that they’re working the hardest they can, but that was the only way that I can put an order through. There must be a better way.
There must be a more efficient way online of taking orders and taking deliveries. And I really feel that if you are someone who can figure this out and I know you’re smart, majority of people you know can figure it out.
Businesses need help because particularly if they’re restaurants, particularly if they’re in the food industry, they have lost so much income right now. They need to pivot even faster.
Like they need to get these line of money going straight away. If you can be a cultural consultant for hire and help businesses transfer to digital, there are lots of ways that you can do this.
And this is things like helping them set up an eCommerce store using Shopify or Squarespace. I recommend Shopify or Squarespace because it’s quick. They haven’t got 3, 6, 12 months to wait for a store to be set up so people can start buying.
They need it done now. They need someone to help them create the products, get images of their products, upload all of that, set up their Squarespace website or Shopify website. I’ve got a tutorial on how to set up a Squarespace website.
I find it really easy one to use and it’s quite low cost, both Shopify and Squarespace to get started in terms of having an eCommerce platform and a way of taking, taking money, a way of taking payment from customers.
I highly recommend if you are, you know, looking for work or looking for ways that you can add value to people. Consider learning Squarespace, learning Shopify, learning how to set that up for people and offering your services in that way.
Like when we transition there, it really is about how do you help businesses put their products online? What are, what are those products look like?
Is that helping, coming, helping the restaurant owner package deliveries, not outside of just the food that they currently offer? Is it helping them come up with habits? Is it helping them come up with all sorts of things?
It’s helping them continue to operate whatever that looks like and putting it online so that people have a way of purchasing it and they have a way of taking money that doesn’t involve us breaching social distancing. And it really is helping them with the digital processes and workflows.
I talked about the example with my favourite Thai place where it was really difficult to get that order in. And we persisted because I really love this Thai place and I need them to survive after this because I cannot go anywhere else.
This is my, my ride or die Thai place. And helping them with the digital processes. And you might be thinking, well how do I do that? How do I actually, you know, map it out? What would you do?
How, what type of digital processes do you like? And help them come up with ways of implementing that. This is different ways that you could, you know, operate as a cultural consultant to help businesses right now.
And I feel like this isn’t an opportunistic thing. You might be saying, well, you know, you’re just taking advantage of people. And I disagree because these service of helping people get online existed before this virus came about.
Helping businesses transfer to social media, helping businesses get up websites, helping businesses get more clients online. This was already a thing.
This was already a thing before this stupid virus came and then just changed everything. It’s just forcing them, forcing businesses now to do it.
Oh sorry, I hit the table. I’m not angry. I just knock, knock my hand on the table. This is a thing. I just noticed that my little self is a little bit covering of things.
Okay, let’s get back. That’s better. You may hear some kids like playing in the background. I live in a complex and so we’re sharing space right now. How do you actually implement this?
Okay, I’m still being covered, see the joys of live streaming, ladida ladida, make myself smaller. This should help. Okay, okay. That’s much better. How do you actually put it all into place?
These are the steps that I would recommend you go through if you were to set up, you know, operate as a coach or consultant and I’m still covering this thing, so I’m going to go even smaller, get out of the way.
This all worked well in practice. And then when I went live, I’m covering things left, right and centre. Okay. Back to it. I love live streams, nothing like a live stream to, you know, show things to have things not work for you.
Anyway, so what– are you kidding me? Anyway, so that’s still working. The first thing I would do is I would come up with a package. I think about what the package would look like in terms of you setting up an offering for them and get really creative.
What does your done for you service look like? And you know, I want to address an obstacle or address, I guess, an objection that people might have.
When I was thinking about this, I thought, well, what’s an objection that people might have? And people may say, well, you know, I’ve had to cut staff right now, so why would I hire you?
And I think the idea of this is not for them to hire you as a staff member. No, no, no. This is about you helping them so that they can keep their staff people employed.
And if anything, it’s you setting it up and then handing it over to them so that they can keep living during this time and they can keep operating. That’s something I would do to address it.
If you do feel like this could be an objection. It isn’t about you becoming an employee of them, it’s about you offering a service that will help them to keep their employees.
The second step is after you’ve come up with your done for you package, you need to document it, whatever that looks like, whether that’s on a Google document, whether that’s, you know, you want to be a bit fancy and use Google slides.
You can also use Canva. Canva has great layouts for presentations and documents as well. And it’s about giving these people with these businesses something to look at.
You can’t just go up to someone and say, “Hey, hire me. I can get your stuff online”. You know, if someone said that to me, I’ll be like, and, and so what, what does that look like? Why are you wasting my time?
Be organised, you know, have the package ready, what, what does it look like. Outline what they get and then put it all in a document and then save it as a PDF.
Have it ready in digital form. And you can also print it if you really wanted to so that you can actually give it to them and then start contacting these businesses.
I think that if you’re waiting for the government to save you particularly if you’re Australian, we’re in trouble, like don’t be waiting for our government to save us.
I think you need to be proactive and I think you need to go out there and reach these businesses yourself, whether that’s looking up their Instagrams, contacting, contacting them on Instagram, social media, looking up their websites, find a way to contact them and then send them your information.
I would also, I guess, be very cautious that when you are emailing them, be honest, be kind and you know, just be sensitive to this time as opposed to saying, you know what, I’m out of work now and I need help. You need– don’t be like that.
I think the approach that you need to take is that this is a difficult time for all of us. I’m offering this service, which I feel can really help you and I’d like to be able to contribute this, this is what I feel that I can do.
I’d love to have a conversation, you know, really kind and respectful and just sensitive to this current time at the moment. That’s how I would approach it in terms of tone. But those are the steps that I would take if, you know, you’d need to come up with something you need, you, you have a little bit of digital skill and you’re able to, you know, start helping them get online.
I really, I, I think this is one of my favourite things because this is what I did when I first started in business. Oh my God, it feels like 10 years ago now. I needed to come up with the way I had to quit my job.
I was working for a bank. And if you ever have worked in finance, in the finance industry, you know how horrible it is working for a bank. And I, I was done and I, but I needed to survive.
I needed to eat. I was like, what skills do I have and how can I help people and what’s the need right now? And this was 10 years ago and this was when, you know, the Facebook, Facebook was still quite new.
This is when people didn’t quite understand YouTube. And I was like, you know what, I can learn it. I’m gonna, you know, use it, learn it and be really confident with it, come up with a couple of examples so that people can say that I can do this and then offer it.
And then, you know, I’ve got clients from it. It definitely is a thing and it’s definitely a way that you can approach businesses and give them value at this current time. The second way is to create a digital offering.
The first one was about creating services as a cultural consultant and doing done for you services to help them get online. The second way is to create a digital offering.
I have seen a lot of fitness friends and peers of mine that I know start to implement this and I say good job. Fantastic to see them actually do this. And this is about, so if you are particularly a fitness professional, there is still a lot of opportunity for you to still keep selling and earn and earn an income during this time.
And this is about creating a package with whatever area that you’re in. If you’re in fitness like, Oh my goodness, you can still create fitness plans, meal plans, if you’re any kind of business person or you have some marketing skill or whatever it is, you can definitely still help people create execution plans.
Like there are so many different plans that you can create and to create a coaching package. And you’re like coaching? What does that mean?
Let’s just say that I’m going to use a fitness one because it’s top of mind because a friend of mine, I’ve noticed, they started to do it. A friend of mine has started to do it.
And I noticed that they have started to create more content on Instagram as a fitness person, which is great. And I know, I knew that before all of this, this friend of mine was already offering zoom calls and he was already doing like fitness plans, but I’ve seen these up the ante because he can’t go into a gym now and good on him.
Definitely it’s about, okay, how do I take that plan? How do I add some more touchpoints that I can do online and package that? And it really is about how can I help people and have some more interactions with them to hold them accountable.
And so they can follow a system that, or follow a, you know, a system or a method that you have to help them get results. Whether that’s losing weight, whether that is, you know, coming up with a meal plan or whether that’s getting organised.
If you’re an organiser, whatever it is, you can definitely create a coaching package where they have a plan and then you interact with the whatever it is, weekly, fortnightly online, via email.
That’s one option. In terms of your digital offering, I’m just laughing at the comments right now. Very funny, Victoria. Yes, we won’t wait for the US either.
In terms of creating a digital offering, a big one that I, I do and I highly recommend that you consider as well, is create a course. People want to learn and with a course, there are so many different ways to put it online, teachable.com is my favourite and they’ve got a free tier of their plans and yes, free.
You can create your content, put it online, use their system to make payments and start making money. Their free tier does take a slightly higher percentage. But think about it.
They’ve got to offer that infrastructure for you to actually, you know, create a product online. I actually think that creating, most people should be creating courses.
I highly recommend that there’s so many things, like I buy a lot of courses cause personally I love self-education. But creating a course is a great way of creating a digital offering.
Packaging your packaging your knowledge, you know all of that money that you spend on your university education? Package that up, put it online. People want to learn.
And I know that if you did it in a way that made sense and you did it in a way that offer people real change. I’m not saying being spammy and like doing like, you know, six days, six-pack abs, none of that fake stuff.
Real change, real things that will help people, that will be a fantastic digital offering that will help you get help get you through this time. And so MVP, MVP is not just most valuable player. It’s also minimal, minimal viable product.
You may be in this situation when you’re like, I have no money to implement any of this. And I get, I get it, I hear you. But there are so many tools that are free right now.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to set up a membership site or to create a video. You can record videos on your phone, you can record videos using the webcam on your computer. That is good enough for now.
You can, you don’t even have to be on camera if you don’t want to. You can do it, just slides and turn off the camera and just talking to the thing. Minimum viable product, what is the least, the fastest, smallest way that you can get it out for now, you just got to do your coaching lessons.
That’s pretty much free. Zoom. I think zoom. I saw that they’re doing a couple of free things for groups here and there.
Keep an eye out for them cause I know they’re going to do a little bit more, but they’re, they’ve got, the pricing tier is not too bad for zoom either. WhatsApp, if you need to WhatsApp it, you know, you can chat to your clients there, have a channel just for them.
Facebook groups. You can do a live stream via Facebook group or use that as the, you know, coaching group that you have. It’s free.
You don’t need to pay for it, but you can, you can put all your people there and put your content in there. Don’t even bother with a membership site for now. Just post your lessons in there and keep it confined to that group.
There are so many different ways to do it. Start to be creative now is the time. And there are so many tools, so many amazing tools.
I wish I had half of these tools when I first started 15 years ago. I’m really, I feel really excited and passionate and I know that this is definitely something that you could implement.
In terms of, in terms of creating a course and digital offering, whether it’s coaching or a course, these are the steps that I would go through. The first step is really about asking yourself how can you take someone from point A to point B in the case of a fitness professional, how can you help someone lose weight quickly?
How can you help someone get their house organised and stop being a hoarder? How can you help someone go live on Facebook without, and so that they can feel more confident and get their message out there? How can you, so many different things go from one state to another.
That’s the question I want you to ask yourself in terms of the digital offering that you can create. After you’ve thought about your transition from A to B. Outline the process.
It’s all about stepping people through stages and giving people a methodology or giving people a process to follow. People want to be led. They need to be told what to do next and next and next.
This is all about outlining your process and naming it. It could be. let’s just think of something on the spot. It could be David’s five-step guide to making bread. I don’t know, I just made that up. But you know what I mean?
It’s about what can you teach them? How many steps does it take? What’s the result that they will get at the end? It’s all about process. And this is how you package your knowledge and this is how you sell it and then create the offer.
Figure out how you’re going to structure it. Are you going to do one-on-one, which is very possible. Like if you’re at home doing nothing, you may as well. You could do it one-on-one via Skype or you could do a group call via Skype as well these days.
You can do a Google, Google Meet. I got rid of Google Hangouts, zoom group calls, the structure is up to you and what you want to work with. Think about how you deliver it.
Will this be weekly videos? Will this be live streams? Would this be lessons? Will it be PDFs that they can download or will it just be documents that they can print and do at home?
Think about all of the pieces that you need to actually implement in order to, for them to get through all of your steps. And then the big thing is that transformation piece that I mentioned.
All pack, all of, all of the secret sauce behind packaging your knowledge and packaging your offering, whether it’s a course or coaching, is the transformation that you can provide people at the end of the day.
Think about that in terms of what you can actually deliver and in the actual offer. That’s how I would recommend you getting started with due to digitising your knowledge and digitising what you have to offer.
Now, the third idea is a little bit of an in between of the digital offering. And I saw this idea from Noah from AppSumo and a couple of other people mentioned this idea and it was about DIY home kits and physical products.
And I thought that this was a good idea to throw out there because I, I, I loved the entrepreneurship of it. And I love the idea of, I think the word is, the scrappiness of it, you know, making the best of a crappy situation.
Like what can you offer now? What can you package in terms of an experience given the situation where people are at home, they’re with their kids, they kids are bored. They need something to do with their kids.
Ideally something educational. What can they do? Come up with something. Some things that I was thinking about was that, you know, painting sets, drawing set, family games.
The one that I think is the real winner is your DIY home science kits. What’s, you know those experiment that you, everyone did in high school where you created a volcano out of vinegar and something else?
Come up with what those things that you need to do that are, figure out where you can get them from. Package that and sell that. Like different ideas like that that you can sell to, you know, your parent friends.
And be like, Hey, I’ve got this home kit. It’s however much money it is, 30 bucks, everything. Like they don’t need to go out and get it. You’ve already done it for them.
It comes with a sheet of instructions, happy days, like just innovative ideas of how can you come up with a physical product that helps people address their need right now, which is entertainment, potentially a bit of education. And just, yeah, make it a really easy and accessible for them.
There are lots of places to research this stuff. I see lots of, I think I spelt Reddit wrong, ideas flowing on Reddit. I see lots of ideas flowing on Facebook groups.
I’m part of the New York times food group and they come up with fantastic ideas and food ideas and you know, all sorts of things. There’s so many, there’s so much information out there and there’s, there are definitely places to listen to where on earth, what on earth people are hungry for.
And just using those soundbites to come up with an idea. Time to get creative time to get innovative and listen to what people are saying right now. You know, ask your parent friends, what would they like, you know, what would in their dream scenario, what type of home kit would they like to buy? And then you know, you use that.
Ask people and then do a bit of research. And I am all about the MVP, the minimum viable product. I think like this type of product or home kit, it’s really easy to get over-excited. And I can say this because this is probably something a younger version of me would have done and buy all of the stock, but you don’t have to do that.
I think you should definitely buy enough of the item to prove that it works and to be able to take photos of what it would look like. But then before you go ahead and source thousands of dollars worth of product, you’ve got enough now to package your product.
Take photos of it, price it, name it, create a beautiful graphic for it using Canva or some other free design tool and then start sharing this with your networks. In terms of payment, the big thing I find with that people say to me is, well, how can I take payments?
Lots of ways to take payment. It could be as simple as as a, you know, minimum viable product orders via PayPal, that type of thing. You know, there’s ways around it, so get creative.
And the thing that I really like about this DIY home kit thing is that this could definitely be a subscription. Totally. It could be a subscription idea. And one of the objections that I, I saw people say with this home kit was that, well there are science kits that exist out there.
I’m like, yeah, there definitely are. Like on first Google, there are a whole bunch of volcano kits, but once again, you position it in, in the real, the realness and the, I guess you position it in terms of you, you position it in terms of, “Hey, this is me and this is my situation. I don’t want to handout, I want to contribute.
I’ve come up with this product, this is what it is, this is what it can do for you guys. And if you’re interested, I’m taking orders for it. Here’s my email address. This is the PayPal email address.” type of context.
It’s real, non spammy and just authentic. I think people will receive that well and it, and it should be, you know, like it’s not about scamming people, it’s never been about scamming people.
It’s been about this is where I’m at, this is my situation. And yeah. That’s what I would recommend. Those are my ideas. I was struggling to sleep last night and I was on YouTube because I love YouTube. I love watching it.
I love being on it. And I saw a video from Simon Sinek and I love his stuff more and more. He’s just such a smart person.
Brilliant. And I saw there was a zoom call where he was talking to his team and on paraphrase, you know, I’m cutting out bits and pieces of what he said, and it’s not word for word, but this is just so that you get the idea.
And he said, we’re in darkness now, but when we come out there will be a better train. He talked about, you know, we’re in a tunnel and it’s dark and like we can’t see it, but when we come out of it, it will be different and some of us will have different jobs when we get up, get out of this and this will be our opportunity and the opportunity is what will we be not how do we preserve what we had.
It’s all about thinking about how can I contribute in a new way and I get it. You know, when I first started in my career, I was a marketing and advertising person and that was print advertising and that was billboards and digital change that very rapidly for us as it, you know, as an industry.
I get it. I, I get like change happening and it really is a matter of not waiting for someone to come rescue you and working with what you have. And you have so many tools now.
You have so many tools at your fingertips now and you have the internet. We have the internet. You know how amazing the internet can be in helping us to connect with people.
The fact that you’re watching me now, like how amazing is that? Use the tools that you’ve got and if you want to follow someone who’s very interesting, Simon Sinek, really great ideas, Simon love your stuff.
I really think that this is the time just to be extremely, I know it’s hard because people would have had, you know, just the rug pulled out from under them.
It’s a very sensitive and it’s like a challenging time. But I really think we can be, like Simon said, optimistic and we can find a way, creative ways, and we can innovate to get ourselves out of this and be better.
You know, we may find that after this is over, you’re, you’re no longer whatever you were prior to it, but just something else and it’s something else that’s better for you. I’m hopeful that this will be what it will be for you.
That essentially wraps up my little live stream and I talked about three things, three business ideas for 2020. Three pivoting ideas like small business trends or small business ideas for you to implement right now.
Particularly if you’re going through this time of what am I going to do for money? Idea number one was, you know, be a coach or consultant for hire help small businesses transfer to digital.
It was a thing before this virus hit. It is still a thing now and a lot of businesses need your help right now. Two was to create a digital offering, whether that is a coaching package or whether that is an online course package, what you know, and you can sell that.
And the third one was slightly in between was about, it’s an idea of, you know, what DIY home kits or physical products can you sell right now given the environment, what do people need right now?
And that’s the basis of all of these ideas. It really is what can, what do people need right now and that I can provide. I hope you found this video useful. If you found this video useful, give me a thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel and oh man, if you’re on my email list, you know that I said I’m going to go live as often as I can during this time.
And that was like a really great idea until like the internet slowed right down and I, but it is what it is. I’m trying to go live as much as I can so that I can help you as much as I can.
But one of the ways that I can help you is that I’ve got this free Facebook Live Cheat Sheets. I talk about all of these ideas that you can implement right now in terms of these business ideas.
And then Facebook live is a really great way of getting your message out there and it’s really easy for the most part to set up and start running with it. I put together a Facebook Live Cheat Sheet and it shows you how to get up and running on the platform.
I’ve put a link to the cheat sheets on the screen somewhere once I figured out how to get this end card all working.
Make sure you grab a copy of that. I, I’m going to come back online now.
What a week. I, you know, I, I’ve seen on the memes and my husband joked about it. It’s like, I feel like the last few weeks have been like the longest time ever and I know everyone is feeling the same thing and I just know and I’m positive that we can get through this.
I really appreciate your time. Everyone who’s on the live stream, thank you for staying. I hope that you found this useful, and if you’re watching the replay, I also appreciate your time.
Be safe, be well, and I will see you on the next live stream. Bye for now.
